Flooring and interior finishes for schools
School floors face a busy daily routine: moving chairs, crowded corridors, wet shoes and frequent cleaning. Dutch Project Flooring helps schools, contractors and architects develop a coordinated plan for flooring, curtains and solar shading, from material selection to carefully scheduled installation on site.
Advice by appointment, at your project location.

A flooring plan shaped by everyday use
Different school spaces need different flooring decisions. Classrooms require attention to chair movement, cleaning and acoustic comfort. Corridors and entrances experience concentrated foot traffic and incoming dirt. A library, staff room or administration office may need a different balance of comfort and appearance.
We start by mapping the rooms, their users and maintenance routines. Toilets, practical teaching rooms and sports halls receive a separate assessment. A floor suitable for a classroom is not automatically suitable for water exposure, chemicals or sports activities.
Linoleum, sheet vinyl or a combination?
Linoleum and commercial sheet vinyl are relevant options for many education spaces. We compare collections from a broad range of established and specialist brands. LVT or carpet tiles can also have a place, for example in office or meeting areas. Selection follows the project specification and the use of each room.
We compare technical documentation, appearance and maintenance costs. Considerations include use classification, castor-chair performance, indentation and cleaning requirements. An acoustic construction is assessed alongside the expected loads; a softer floor build-up is not automatically an improvement for every application.
Where the brief specifies slip resistance or fire behaviour, we review the exact product and floor assembly against those requirements before ordering.

Consider acoustics and daylight together
A calm learning space requires coordination between floors, ceilings, walls and furnishings. Impact sound transmitted to the room below is different from reverberation within a classroom. We make that distinction clear when comparing floors and use the relevant product data to substantiate performance.
Curtains can provide privacy, daylight control or room darkening. External screens and roller shutters can form part of the solar shading plan. Controls, access, glazing and any fire-performance requirements are agreed with the project team in advance.
Where children use the space, operating systems and fitting arrangements need particular attention. We review the selected configuration against the project’s safety and documented fabric-performance requirements. Track or bracket positions and clearance around furniture are checked during final measurement.

Refurbishment within a realistic school programme
For work during school holidays, the programme extends beyond the first and last installation days. Removing existing finishes, repairing the subfloor, checking moisture, applying levelling compounds and allowing drying time all affect when a classroom can reopen.
Together we agree work zones, access and the sequence of activities. Furniture storage, clear routes, construction dust and coordination with other trades need attention. For phased refurbishment, each area has an agreed handover point before furniture returns and normal use resumes.
Plan maintenance before selecting the material
Involve the facilities manager or cleaning contractor early. Which equipment is available, how often is the floor cleaned and how much time is allocated? Suitable entrance flooring and furniture protection form part of our advice. At handover, we document the selected collection's care requirements and how damage can be reported or repaired.
A clear brief for your education project
Send floor plans, approximate areas, photographs of existing conditions and your preferred installation period. A room schedule and any specification help us provide more focused advice and pricing. We distinguish flooring, preparation, skirting, transitions and additional works. Dutch Project Flooring offers appointments on site, focusing on Spain and the Netherlands; projects elsewhere in Europe are assessed according to their scope and programme.
Frequently asked questions
Is linoleum suitable for every room in a school?
No. Linoleum can suit various education spaces, but the collection, expected traffic and cleaning arrangements must match. Wet areas, sports halls and specialist teaching rooms need individual assessment.
Can installation take place during school holidays?
We can plan for this. Feasibility depends on the area, subfloor, material availability and necessary drying times. We confirm the installation period once these factors have been assessed.
Can curtains and external shading be included?
Yes. Flooring can be combined with curtains, external screens and roller shutters. We assess daylight control, privacy, operation and the applicable project requirements for each room.
