What is linoleum — and is it the same as Marmoleum?

Linoleum is a floor covering with its own material composition and appearance. It is different from vinyl or PVC flooring. Marmoleum is Forbo’s brand name for linoleum. Other manufacturers also make linoleum; brand, material and product specification remain separate choices in a project brief.

Tarkett Originale Essenza+ and Style Emme are examples within our wider choice of manufacturers, with different visual treatments and surface finishes. We establish the appropriate flooring type before selecting a colour and product reference. Samples are best assessed alongside wall finishes, doors and the lighting in the actual space.

Where does linoleum work well?

Consider teaching rooms, circulation areas, offices and selected healthcare spaces. A continuous visual finish can make a building feel calmer where many doors, furniture arrangements and user groups meet. Different colours can help distinguish departments.

A sector label is not technical approval. A healthcare waiting area needs a different assessment from a treatment room. Wet areas, unusual chemical exposure or specific electrical requirements require a flooring specification with evidence supporting that particular application.

The subfloor shapes the result

A good finish begins with an assessment of the existing substrate or new screed. Flatness, moisture, adhesion and junctions influence the preparation required. Door clearances, skirtings and transitions to other floor finishes also need attention.

The selected product determines the installation system, adhesive and seam treatment. We agree sheet layout and sightlines before work starts, incorporating entrances, columns and doorways into the installation plan.

Plan maintenance before handover

Involve the person who will manage cleaning when selecting the floor. Daily care depends on the surface finish and how the building is used. Our maintenance advice follows the instructions for the selected collection. Effective entrance matting and suitable furniture protection deserve as much consideration as the cleaning product.

From drawings to a workable proposal

Send a floor plan, approximate area and description of the building. We discuss room functions, access and the intended programme. For refurbishment, we also establish whether the building will remain occupied during the work.

The proposal identifies the flooring and preparatory work clearly. Site assessments are arranged by appointment, with logistics and installation agreed in advance for international projects.

Frequently asked questions

Is Marmoleum the same as linoleum?

Marmoleum is a Forbo linoleum brand. We compare linoleum collections from different manufacturers and can work with a specified brand or product reference. The final choice follows the brief and intended use.

Is linoleum suitable for every healthcare environment?

No. Suitability depends on the room, cleaning procedures and technical requirements. The specific product reference and complete floor system must match those needs.

Can you advise on site?

Yes, by appointment. Share the location, drawings and project size first so we can arrange a focused assessment and agree the next steps.
