Ship interiors: specify by space

Cabins, corridors, lounges and crew areas have different demands. We discuss the floor finish, carpet and curtains as part of one interior package, with room schedules and a practical installation sequence. A cabin may call for a quieter, softer finish, while circulation areas need a material selected around traffic, cleaning and the vessel’s operating conditions.

Marine refurbishment begins with the vessel type, its use, the proposed works and the requirements supplied by the owner, yard or naval architect. Samples help agree appearance; technical documentation determines whether the proposed product is appropriate for the location.

02

Marine carpet and resilient flooring

Carpet, carpet tiles and resilient finishes can be considered for suitable interior spaces. Material selection includes the substrate, fixing method, edge details and any requirements concerning weight, fire behaviour or moisture exposure. We check the particular product and installation system rather than treating all commercial flooring as marine flooring.

For cruise ship and other regulated applications, any required marine approvals must be verified before procurement. A land-based fire classification does not establish marine compliance. The owner or project team should supply the applicable specifications and approval requirements so the product selection can be reviewed against them.

03

Curtains and soft interior finishes

Made-to-measure curtains can be coordinated with cabin and lounge flooring. We discuss privacy, daylight, darkening, fabric appearance and rail positions. Measuring includes the opening, mounting detail and finished floor level; it also considers access for maintenance and the available clearance around furniture.

Where a project requires approved flame-retardant fabrics or other documented performance, the exact fabric and finished configuration need checking. Upholstery requests should include the furniture schedule and photographs so we can establish the scope and confirm feasibility before including them in the proposal.

04

Refit preparation and access

Existing coverings and adhesive residues may need removing before the new finish is installed. Substrate condition, moisture, corrosion or movement concerns are reviewed with the responsible project team. The preparation method and compatible adhesives are agreed before installation starts.

Refit logistics include access routes, delivery slots, storage, work permits and coordination with other trades. A port stay or yard programme must allow for preparation and the selected products’ curing requirements. Phased areas and out-of-hours work can be discussed around the actual vessel schedule.

05

From specification to handover

Send vessel details, its location, drawings, area schedules, photographs and the required completion window. Include existing technical specifications and the party responsible for approving materials. We can then discuss the package, access and the information needed for a detailed proposal.

The agreed scope identifies the areas, finishes, preparation and installation work. Handover should include the relevant supplier care guidance and product documentation. We work by appointment at the project location, with projects in Spain, the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe assessed individually.

Before we begin

Questions for your project.

Do you provide more than ship flooring?

The interior package can include carpet and made-to-measure curtains. Send details of any furniture upholstery request so its feasibility and scope can be confirmed.

Are all products suitable for ships?

No. Suitability and any required marine approvals must be checked for the exact product, assembly, vessel and location before ordering.

Can you work within a refit window?

We discuss phased access and the yard programme, then check preparation, supply and curing times before agreeing dates.

Share your location, plans, required services and target dates. We can discuss the scope and arrange an appointment at your project location.
